July 2020

We are delighted and proud to announce that we have pledged our official commitment to the Food Waste Reduction Roadmap, an industry-wide programme led by IGD and WRAP to tackle food waste in the UK.

The Roadmap has been introduced with the aim of ensuring the UK food industry plays its critical role in achieving the UN’s global Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to halve global food waste, as well as WRAP’s Courtauld Commitment 2025 targets.

By committing to the programme, we have agreed to take targeted action to reduce food waste from field to fork, so we will be setting new milestones across our own operations as well as encouraging and helping our suppliers and customers do the same. Importantly, we will track and report regularly on our progress to ensure our actions are achieving measurable impact and making a genuine difference.

We have already begun implementing new practices across our bakeries, including segregating food waste from general waste, and as a result, we are well on the way to exceeding a 20% reduction in waste within the first 12 months.

Commenting on our commitment, Peter Maddox, WRAP Director, said “The link between food waste and climate change is something we can no longer ignore. Globally, around a third of all food is wasted and the IPCC estimated that food waste contributed nearly 10% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions, between 2010 and 2016.

“Having the support of companies like BBF is crucial in helping to mitigate against this problem through its own actions, and by engaging with its client base. We are delighted that BBF is supporting the UK Food Waste Reduction Roadmap in this way, and will work with its clients to influence change. We would encourage others to follow its lead.”
